EVENTS

Advent: A Women’s
Exodus & Gospel
Sundays, Dec. (1, 8), 15 & 22, 10 a.m.
University Baptist Church
1219 University Ave. S.E.
The drama is based on feminist study and reading of the “infancy narratives” in Matthew and Luke, and their roots in Hebrew scripture. Members of the laity wrote and are producing the work, in conjunction with the UBSC Chorale. The drama was inspired by the work of the late feminist scholar Jane Schaberg. FFI: 612-331-1768, info@-ubcmn.org, www.ubc-mn.org.

Advent Evening Prayer Series
Mondays, Dec. (2), 9 & 16, 7 to 8 p.m.
Sabbath House
3228 Portland Ave. S.
People of all faith traditions are welcome. This year’s theme, “Calling to Star Power for the Solstice,” is inspired by a poem that addresses God as the creator of the stars, recognizing how each of us is called to shine in and from the heart.
More details: 612-822-2623 or sabbathhouse@fslf.org.

Advent Quiet Wednesdays
Dec. (4), 11 & 18, 6:30 to 8:15 p.m.
Lake Nokomis Presbyterian Church
1620 E. 46th St.
The sanctuary is open, with Labyrinth, prayer stations and candlelit quiet, as a space to rest your soul during the craziness of the season. The church’s number is 612-721-4463.

Women’s Christian Luncheon

Bethany Lutheran Church

Lunch and Learn

A special Kiddush luncheon is planned (reservations are necessary by calling 651-698-8874) and the theme will be “The December Dilemma,” led by Senior Rabbi Alan Shavit-Lonstein. Free and open to the public.

Celebrate Christmas with the Neighborhood

Wednesday, Dec. 18, 6 p.m. (soup), 7 p.m. (service)
Faith Mennonite Church
2720 E. 22nd St.
The church welcomes anyone and everyone to cookies and carols on the 15th and to an ecumencial Advent Taize service on the 18th. The Taize worship, a contemplative service of song, readings and silence, will involve the youth of Faith Mennonite and Cabrini Catholic churches. A simple soup meal will be served beforehand.

Blue Christmas
Worship Service
Saturday, Dec. 21, 4 p.m.
Bethel Lutheran Church
4120 17th Ave. S.
Christmas can be a difficult time for many. There are many losses that make the holidays a time of discouragement. For some it may be the first Christmas without a loved one or the continuing experience of loss; the anguish of broken relationships; the despair of illness; the insecurity of unemployment—all of these can make us feel alone in the midst of the constant refrain about the happiness of the season. We need a time and place to acknowledge our sadness and concerns; we need to know that we are not alone.
Join us in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture and music that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle, for those who are alone. Everyone is welcome.

Hope for Parents
Monday, Jan. 4, 7 p.m.
Hope Lutheran Church
5728 Cedar Ave. S.
The next installment features Alec Fisher, a sophomore at the U of M. His documentary about bullying in Minnesota public schools, “Minnesota Nice?”, will be screened and discussed by a panel of local school leaders. Created when Fisher was 17, the film has been shown in schools internationally and at education conferences across the country.
The forum is free of charge. More information at 612-827-2655, www.hopempls.org. Free—CEU certificates available.

Hymn Festival: Psalms
at Full Stretch
Friday, Jan. 10, 7:30 p.m.
